If you're organising a group gift:

  • People saying they'll 'send it later' and forgetting
  • Losing track of who's actually paid
  • Awkwardly reminding the same few people
  • Fronting the money yourself and chasing it back
  • Cash, bank transfers and IOUs all coming in through different channels

How to organise a group gift collection

Organising a group gift usually means one person fronting the cost and then spending a fortnight chasing everyone else. Kollect turns that into a single link: you set a suggested amount per person and a deadline, share it wherever your group already talks, and everyone pays into one place.

Because every contribution lands in the same pot, you always know exactly how much you've raised and who still needs a reminder — no spreadsheet, no mental maths, and no awkward 'did you sort me out for that gift?' messages.

How much should everyone chip in?

Set a suggested amount rather than a fixed one — it gives people a clear steer while letting them give a little more or less if they want. For a group of ten, £10–£15 per person comfortably covers most milestone presents; for a closer group or a more significant occasion, £20–£25 is common.

If you're not sure of the final budget, start the collection first and decide on the exact gift once you can see how much the group has raised. Set the deadline a week before you need to buy so you have time to order and receive it.

No more chasing people for money

The deadline does the chasing for you. Everyone sees the same countdown, and you can see at a glance who's contributed — so the few stragglers get one friendly nudge instead of you sending five into the group chat.

Once the deadline passes, the money's already collected in one place and ready to spend on the gift. If you need a dedicated page for a specific occasion, see also our pages on collecting for a birthday present or a leaving gift.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

  • How do I collect money for a group gift?

Decide on a suggested amount and a deadline that gives you time to buy the gift after the collection closes. Create the link, share it in whatever chat the group already uses, and let people pay in their own time. The dashboard shows the running total and who's contributed as payments come in.

  • Do people need an account to chip in?

No. Anyone with the link can contribute — there's no sign-up required to pay.

  • Can I see who has paid?

Yes — your organiser view updates with each payment. If the deadline is two days away and three people haven't chipped in, you can message those three directly rather than sending a general reminder into the group that everyone ignores.

  • What if someone wants to give more or less than the suggested amount?

The suggested amount is a guide, not a requirement. Someone closer to the recipient might want to give more; someone who has met them only a handful of times might prefer to give less. The link accepts any amount, so both are fine.

  • When do I get the money?

Contributions accumulate and are available to you once the collection closes at your deadline. Set the deadline a few days before you need to buy the gift to give yourself time to check the total and place your order — especially if you're relying on delivery.

  • Is it good for office and leaving gifts?

Particularly well suited to it. Office collections have the added challenge of needing to stay discreet — the person leaving is still at their desk. Because the link is shared one-to-one rather than in a public channel, and contributors don't need an account, the whole thing stays quiet. For more detail on the office scenario specifically, see the leaving gift page.
